YouTube Ad Performance Metrics
1. CPM (Cost Per Mille/Thousand Impressions)
Definition: The cost an advertiser pays for one thousand impressions of their ad.
Formula: CPM = (Total Ad Spend ÷ Total Impressions) × 1000
Example:
Total Ad Spend: ₹5,000
Total Impressions: 50,000
CPM = (₹5,000 ÷ 50,000) × 1000 = ₹100
This means you pay ₹100 for every 1,000 times your ad is shown.
Industry Benchmark: ₹100-₹600 for YouTube ads in India
2. CPC (Cost Per Click)
Definition: The cost an advertiser pays each time a user clicks on their ad.
Formula: CPC = Total Ad Spend ÷ Total Clicks
Example:
Total Ad Spend: ₹8,000
Total Clicks: 400
CPC = ₹8,000 ÷ 400 = ₹20
This means you pay ₹20 for each click on your ad.
Industry Benchmark: ₹3-₹25 for YouTube ads in India
3. CPV (Cost Per View)
Definition: The cost an advertiser pays when a viewer watches 30 seconds of their video ad (or the full ad if it's shorter) or interacts with the ad.
Formula: CPV = Total Ad Spend ÷ Total Views
Example:
Total Ad Spend: ₹10,000
Total Video Views: 2,500
CPV = ₹10,000 ÷ 2,500 = ₹4
This means you pay ₹4 for each qualified view of your video ad.
Industry Benchmark: ₹2-₹10 for YouTube ads in India
4. CTR (Click-Through Rate)
Definition: The percentage of people who click on your ad after seeing it.
Formula: CTR = (Total Clicks ÷ Total Impressions) × 100
Example:
Total Impressions: 100,000
Total Clicks: 500
CTR = (500 ÷ 100,000) × 100 = 0.5%
This means 0.5% of people who saw your ad clicked on it.
Industry Benchmark: 0.5%-2% for YouTube video ads
5. VTR (View-Through Rate)
Definition: The percentage of people who watched your video ad completely or for a significant duration.
Formula: VTR = (Total Views ÷ Total Impressions) × 100
Example:
Total Impressions: 50,000
Total Views (30 seconds or complete): 12,500
VTR = (12,500 ÷ 50,000) × 100 = 25%
This means 25% of people who saw your ad watched it for at least 30 seconds.
Industry Benchmark: 15%-40% for engaging YouTube ads
6. CPL (Cost Per Lead)
Definition: The cost an advertiser pays to acquire one lead (someone who shows interest by filling a form, signing up, etc.).
Formula: CPL = Total Ad Spend ÷ Total Leads
Example:
Total Ad Spend: ₹25,000
Total Leads Generated: 125
CPL = ₹25,000 ÷ 125 = ₹200
This means you pay ₹200 to acquire each lead through your YouTube ads.
Industry Benchmark: ₹100-₹1,000+ depending on industry and lead quality
7. CPA (Cost Per Acquisition/Action)
Definition: The cost an advertiser pays when a user completes a specific action (purchase, sign-up, download, etc.).
Formula: CPA = Total Ad Spend ÷ Total Conversions
Example:
Total Ad Spend: ₹40,000
Total Conversions (Purchases): 80
CPA = ₹40,000 ÷ 80 = ₹500
This means you pay ₹500 to acquire each customer through your YouTube ads.
Industry Benchmark: Varies widely by industry (₹200-₹5,000+)
8. ROAS (Return on Ad Spend)
Definition: The revenue generated for every rupee spent on advertising.
Formula: ROAS = (Revenue from Ads ÷ Total Ad Spend) × 100
Example:
Total Ad Spend: ₹50,000
Revenue Generated: ₹2,50,000
ROAS = (₹2,50,000 ÷ ₹50,000) = 5:1 or 500%
This means for every ₹1 spent on ads, you generate ₹5 in revenue.
Industry Benchmark: 4:1 (400%) or higher is generally considered good
9. Engagement Rate
Definition: The percentage of viewers who interact with your ad (likes, shares, comments, clicks).
Formula: Engagement Rate = (Total Engagements ÷ Total Views) × 100
Example:
Total Video Views: 10,000
Total Engagements (likes, shares, comments, clicks): 300
Engagement Rate = (300 ÷ 10,000) × 100 = 3%
This means 3% of viewers engaged with your ad in some way.
Industry Benchmark: 2%-5% for video ads
10. Video Completion Rate
Definition: The percentage of viewers who watched your entire video ad.
Formula: Completion Rate = (Complete Views ÷ Total Impressions) × 100
Example:
Total Impressions: 20,000
Complete Views: 4,000
Completion Rate = (4,000 ÷ 20,000) × 100 = 20%
This means 20% of people watched your entire video ad.
Industry Benchmark: 15%-30% for well-optimized ads
